At work here in Southern California, Filipinos in the office followed the news of the flood on GMA.tv. The indiviual efforts to collect relief funds showed the tremendous heart of the community. Whether it was playing a little Tennis to raise a couple hundred dollars, or the local Colleges sharing some native beverages to raise another couple hundred, it was heart felt. At the individual level it showed the heart of a nation’s people.
At the Government level, I am the least credible to question the their effort because I’m just an individual Fil-Am on the outside looking in. But from that view at least, the only course of action we see from over here is the Philippine Government simply asking for more wealthier nations for relief. There’s no action to build more accurate Dopplar Radar systems, there’s no preventive shoring of levies, or development of flood infrastructure ever talked about or actioned. The only imparative is to ask for wealthy outsiders for money after the fact. This wasn’t the first storm, isn’t going to be the last, and many are storms are brewing in the ocean today. Is this an acceptable Policy?
